Benefits of Using Plants in Indoor Environments: Exploring Common Research Gaps

The introduction of green plants in indoor spaces has raised a great amount interest motivated by plants’ supposed capacity to improve the quality built environments. Subsequent studies have covered broad range topics, testing environments for their climate-mitigating effects, acoustic benefits, potential energy savings and enhancement microbial communities. Despite diversity focus these studies, no major breakthroughs been made involving use after nearly thirty years research. To identify inconsistencies gaps research, this review, an explorative nature, presents analysis plant-related parameters reported 31 cases experimental research papers were identified searching online databases Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Scopus MDPI selected based on relevance topic focus. Two classifications table form provide overview 38 used reviewed conclusions drawn from tables highlight strongly anthropocentric frame reference across majority which prioritize human convenience above plant physiology, display overall scarcity inconsistency reported.
